Best Dublin Areas for a First Stay

Where to base yourself in Dublin for a first visit, by atmosphere rather than by star rating.

The Ha'penny Bridge over the River Liffey in Dublin

Base yourself south of the river

For a first visit, staying south of the Liffey and east of Grafton Street puts you inside walking distance of most of what you will want to do, and inside a quieter, more elegant part of the city than the streets immediately around the bridges.

Merrion and Fitzwilliam

Georgian squares, brass plaques, gardens, and the best museums a few doors away. Calm in the evening, walkable to everything, and the most quietly premium address in the city. Best if you want elegance and early nights.

Portobello and the canal

Coloured doors, a canal walk, good coffee, and neighbourhood restaurants where the room is full of locals. Fifteen minutes' walk from the centre. Best if you want to feel like you live somewhere for three days.

Ranelagh

A village high street of wine bars and small restaurants, a short tram ride in. Best if food matters more than proximity.

Where to think twice

The streets directly around the busiest nightlife blocks are loud until late and priced for convenience. A ten-minute walk in almost any direction buys you a better room, a quieter night, and a nicer morning.
